Not everyone has the passion, determination and stamina (or sheer bloodymindedness, some might say) to keep at a new process, technology or model until it delivers. Voice over IP took 10 years and is still an immature market. Recent trends like SoaS have been recycled for close to 20 years and are still trying to make headway.

Early adopters have a different mentality from most of the rest of us. Green IT is still very new, its benefits are anecdotally proven at best, and yet it is one of the top initiatives in the IT departments of thousands of companies of all sizes. How long before the glow wears off?

How many of us are really thinking green, working out how to make the most of it, measuring and increasing the benefits, or really transforming our priorities and thinking? And how many are jumping on the bandwagon and going along for the ride, euphorically believing that there are no compromises, that it's all benefit and no cost? How many are thinking they can have their cake and eat it too because the crowd says so?

I think environmental consciousness at the corporate level is wonderful, but I suppose I'd be more comfortable if I thought more people were bringing real analysis, awareness and intention to it, not just following along and believing overly simplified promises and platitudes. There's an argument that simplification and polarization are what most people need in order to act, but doesn't that just smack of the cynicism of politicians and marketers?  It's so much better to encourage people to wake up and think rather than to follow the crowd.  So that brings us back to "Green and Gold", which seems like it might be grounded enough in the real world to inspire real thinking and innovation in Green IT, and not just bring in the masses to be converted.
